Boys hockey: Wave knock off Knights

Senior High looking for edge in race for Gambucci Cup

By: Brad Elliott Schlossman, Grand Forks Herald

It has been so long since East Grand Forks Senior High has won the Gambucci Cup that co-coach Cory Chupka can’t put his finger on the exact date.

But the Green Wave took a big step toward winning it for the first time since 2004 on Tuesday night.

Tommy Hajicek scored twice and added an assist and Zack Lawdermilt had a goal and two assists to lead Senior High to a 4-1 home victory over North Dakota state defending champion Grand Forks Central.

The Knights currently hold the trophy that goes to the Greater Grand Forks team with the best head-to-head record.

“Oh boy, you would have go to back to my first year with (Jim) Scanlan coaching,” Chupka said of the last time Senior High was the best team in the Grand Cities. “Whenever you play Central at home, you know it’s going to be a good team. We played very well tonight as a team. We were moving the puck well and getting to the puck.”

It didn’t take much time for the Green Wave to make their statement.

On the first shift of the game, Corey Mack dug the puck out of the corner and sent it to Lawdermilt in the slot. Central goalie Derek Fuller made the first save, but the puck came out to Hajicek, who snapped it between Fuller’s pads just 14 seconds into the game.

“East Side showed up ready to play,” Central coach Tony Bina said. “They were moving their feet. They were finishing their checks. We stood around and watched for most of the night.”

Central, which dropped to 5-3 on the season, fell behind by two goals early in the second. Lawdermilt sent Tyler Hajicek on a breakaway. The junior forward snapped a shot off the left post and in at 1:48.

The Knights got their lone goal of the game at 11:08 of the second, when leading scorer Johnny Simonson curled around the right circle and fired a shot high over Senior High goalie Hunter Aubol (23 saves) for a four-on-three power-play goal.

“We were right back in the game at that point,” said Bina, whose team played without a couple of defensemen who were injured at the Herald Jason Stadstad Hockey Classic last weekend. “We were never really out of it until late in the third period.”

Lawdermilt extended Senior High’s lead with a breakaway goal late in the second, scoring on the backhand for a 3-1 Green Wave lead.

The final goal was scored when Lawdermilt connected with Tyler Hajicek on a backdoor feed at 10:52.

“The boys are really fired up right now,” said Chupka, whose team has defeated Warroad and the Knights in their last two games. “They worked hard and they came ready to play tonight.”

EGF Senior High 4,

GF Central 1

Key play: Zach Lawdermilt’s goal for a 3-1 Senior High lead in the second period.

Key player: Tommy Hajicek, 2 goals, 1 assist.

December Update from the Coaches

December 20, 2010

Greetings from the 2010-2011 Greenwave Boys Hockey team.

A special thank you to all the members of the 1960-1961 team that were able to join us for our first annual alumni night.

The Boys hockey team is currently riding a three game winning streak after starting the season 0-2. The season started with losses to 8AA contenders Bemidji and Brainerd. On Dec. 4 playing our third game in as many days, the Wave beat Park Rapids 11-2 for our first win. Leading the way in the win was the line of Tommy Hajicek (1g -4a), Zack Lwdermilt (1g-4a) and Cory Mack (2g-2a). Scoring their first career goals were Gage Ausmus, Nick Korynta and Tyler Hajicek.

With a whole week off between games the Wave were able get some quality practices in before facing the Lake of the Woods Bears and Alex Lyons, one of the best goaltenders in the State of Minnesota. The Wave outshot the Bears 46-14, and won 4-2. Having another good night for the Wave was the line of Hajicek(2g), Mack (1g-1a) and Lawdermilt (3a). The win moved the wave to 2-2 on the season and more importantly 2-0 in Section 8A play.

Friday December 17th, saw the Waves biggest rival come to town in the Warriors from Warroad. With another full week to prepare the Wave came out flying in the first period, outshooting Warroad 10-5 while building a 3-0 lead on goals from Mack, Lawdermilt and Hajicek. That would be all the scoring the wave needed as the game would finish 3-0. With the Hajicek line providing all the scoring, the Waves defense showed its strength in holding Warroad to just 18 shots on net and helping goalie Hunter Aubol earn his first shutout of the season.

This week the Wave have two big games before the Christmas break. On Tuesday, the Wave open up the Gambucci Cup playing host to Grand Forks Central. Thursday the Wave look to stay unbeaten in Section 8A as they travel to Crookston to play the Pirates.

See you at the Rink,

Tyler Palmiscno

Boys hockey: Wave can't capitalize

East Grand Forks Senior High was unable to turn opportunities into points Thursday night. That ultimately spelled a 4-1 Green Wave loss to Bemidji High at the East Grand Forks Civic Center in the season opener for Senior High.

By: Robb Jeffries, Grand Forks Herald

East Grand Forks Senior High was unable to turn opportunities into points Thursday night.

That ultimately spelled a 4-1 Green Wave loss to Bemidji High at the East Grand Forks Civic Center in the season opener for Senior High.

Tyler Follis scored twice for Bemidji and nine different Lumberjacks recorded points while playing solid defense throughout. Miah Graves made several tough stops in goal for Bemidji, finishing the night with 18 saves.

Jake White put Bemidji on the board first, controlling a loose puck and pushing it past Senior High goalie Hunter Aubol eight minutes into the game.

Follis built the lead up to two for the Lumberjacks, rebounding a stray shot from forward Matt Serratore. Serratore later had an opportunity to add to Bemidji’s early lead on a breakaway, but Aubol made a difficult glove save.

“We came out with a lot of energy … and then they scored a quick one and it seemed like we lost the momentum after that,” said Senior High co-coach Tyler Palmiscno. “Then we spend the first eight minutes of the second period on the power play, make it a 2-1 game, and they come right back.”

A flurry of Bemidji penalties gave Senior High plenty of chances to score early in the second period.

Sophomore Tommy Hajicek briefly turned around Senior High’s power play luck, punching the puck in from the right side with a five-on-three advantage, cutting Bemidji’s lead to 2-1.

Less than a minute later, however, Bemidji responded with a goal from Max Hazelton, who deflected a shot from point by defenseman Brady Devescovi.

Follis put the icing on the victory for Bemidji with his second goal of the night early in the third period.

Hajicek had a chance on a breakaway to put in his second goal midway through the last period, but was stopped by Graves.

The Senior High power play struggled all night, managing just 12 shots on goal during 12 power plays.

“Early in the season, sometimes it’s easier to kill penalties than it is to play with a man advantage, and that was pretty evident tonight,” Palmiscno said. “We’ll have a good week in practice and work on it, and turn it around.”

Aubol made 23 saves for the Green Wave.
