BEMIDJI, Minn. — Tyler Follis scored two goals in the first period to lead Bemidji to a victory over East Grand Forks Senior High on Thursday.

Zack Lawdermilt scored midway through the second period for the Green Wave, who had lost to Bemidji 5-1 earlier this season.

Senior High pulled its goalie with 2 minutes, 42 seconds left in the third period, but the Green Wave were unable to beat Lumberjacks goalie Miah Graves, who finished with 18 stops.

Senior High goalie Hunter Aubol had 38 saves.

“We had some good attempts, but their goalie made a huge save,” Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. “(Aubol) played really well. He came out and challenged and worked hard.”

Bemidji HS boys hockey team tops East Grand Forks for sixth straight win

Pioneer Photo/Monte Draper Tyler Follis scored a pair of goals in the first period and Jeremiah Graves made 17 saves to lead the Bemidji boys hockey team to a 2-1 victory over East Grand Forks Thursday at The Sanford Center.

The win extended Bemidji’s winning streak to six games and upped the Lumberjacks’ overall record to 13-1-1. The lone blemish is a 4-3 loss to Cloquet in the opening game of the holiday tournament in Duluth.

East Grand Forks’ record dipped to 7-7.

BHS held a territorial edge in the opening stanza and the pressure finally paid off when Follis completed a nifty three-way passing play with his first goal 6:19 into the contest.

Graves started the play when he saw EGF on a line change and zipped a pass to John Forseth along the left boards at center ice. Forseth carried into the Green Wave zone and hit Matt Serratore with a perfect feed and Serratore promptly backhanded the puck into the slot where Follis was camped.

His quick wrister beat EGF goalie Hunter Aubol over the glove and the Jacks were ahead to stay.

Bemidji continued to dominate territorially and at 14:51 Follis struck again, this time converting a feed from Jordan Heller.

The two Jacks attacked the Green Wave net and Follis began the action with a shot from the low right circle. Aubol made the save on that chance and was fortunate that Heller shot the rebound off the side of the net.

Heller, however, followed his shot and promptly sent a pass to the crease where Follis was in perfect position to notch his second goal of the night.

Bemidji outshot the Green Wave 14-6 in the first period and owned a 13-6 edge in the middle stanza. East Grand Forks, however, scored the lone goal of the session midway through the period when Zack Laudermilt found room behind the BHS defense and beat Graves on a solo breakaway.

Neither team was able to find the net in the final 17 minutes although, once again, the Lumberjacks controlled the shot chart. Aubol had 12 saves in the final stanza and finished with 37. Graves stopped 17 total shots.

The Lumberjacks host Roseau 7:30 p.m. at the Community Arena.

In Thursday’s junior varsity game Bemidji and EGF skated to a 6-6 overtime tie.

East Grand Forks Senior High positioned itself as the No. 1 team in Greater Grand Forks on Thursday night at the Civic Center. And it took possibly the softest shot of the day to cement that statement.

Grand Forks Senior High positioned itself as the No. 1 team in Greater Grand Forks on Thursday night at the Civic Center.

And it took possibly the softest shot of the day to cement that statement.

Green Wave senior defender Blake Christiansen scored in overtime when his light shot from the blue line deflected off the unsuspecting skates of Grand Forks Red River defenseman Matt Verke and into the net to give Senior High a 3-2 victory.

“(Christiansen) was just trying to get the puck on net,” Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. “It’s one of those things where you put the puck on net and anything can happen. It’s cliché, but that’s what happened in overtime.”

Senior High, which improved to 7-5, sits atop the Gambucci Cup standings, which track the head-to-head matchups between the Green Wave, Red River and Grand Forks Central.

The Green Wave defeated Central 4-1 in late December.

Red River coach Bill Chase said there was no one to blame on the late goal.

“It’s hard,” Chase said. “(Red River goalie Andrew Butkowski and Verke) didn’t see it coming. It’s unfortunate to lose in that way, but hey, that’s sports.”

Chase was pleased with how the Riders bounced back from Tuesday’s 8-2 surprising loss to Central at Purpur Arena.

“It was a good character game,” Chase said. “What I really liked is when (Senior High) scored their second goal, we didn’t quit. East Side played hard. That’s just a good high school hockey game.”

The Riders played without its top point-getter, Casey Fugleberg, who is day-to-day with an injury suffered Tuesday against Central.

Red River went with another lineup change, starting backup goalie Butkowski in place of starter Bryan Nies.

Butkowski finished with 29 saves, including a key stuff of Senior High forward Cory Mack at the door step with a minute left in regulation.

But the Riders couldn’t overcome the play of Green Wave junior forward Zack Lawdermilt, who scored two goals to bump his season total to nine.

Lawdermilt scored just 2:27 into the first period on a rebound with assists going to Gage Ausmus and Mack.

Red River would tie it midway through the opening period on a goal from Brock Dahl, whose shot from the slot trickled past Wave goalie Hunter Aubol, who ended with 19 stops.

Lawdermilt struck again at 6:41 of the third period when he scored from the right circle on a 2-on-1 situation.

“Zack has been very good,” Chupka said. “He keeps flying up and down that wing. He’s a goal scorer. That goal in the third period … to shelf that … that’s a goal-scorer’s goal.”

The Riders, who dropped to 7-3, forced overtime when Alan Zahui scored a power-play goal on the rebound of Jon Lizotte’s hard-working shot in the slot at 12:57 of the third.

That set up Christiansen’s game-winner.

“We needed this win to get our confidence back,” said Chupka, whose team lost to Moorhead 5-2 on Tuesday. “We came out really prepared and got a win.”

The East Grand Forks Senior High boys hockey team doesn’t have an upset win over a top-ranked team like Moorhead.

So what? Big deal. The Green Wave have other things in common with the Spuds and they showed in a 5-2 loss on Tuesday night at the Moorhead Sports Center.

“We’re in the same boat as them,” said Senior High co-head coach Tyler Palmiscno. “We’re still trying to figure some things out.”

Palmiscno’s right. The Green Wave (6-5) have split the last two games and it was easy to see why that was against Moorhead (5-3-1).

They overcame being dominated in puck possession in the first period to head into the intermission down only 2-1.

Senior High rallied from a 3-1 hole when Tyler Hajicek cut it to 3-2 with 2:35 left in the second.

And that’s when the breakdown came. Moorhead took a 4-2 lead off a goal scored from a faceoff.

A minute later, Moorhead’s Tony Uglem scored his second goal of the night.

“That period, we had a bit of a letdown,” said Senior High defenseman Gage Ausmus. “It’s frustrating because we made mistakes on the faceoff and if we don’t make those, we have a chance to win it.”

But there are positives to take from this. Remember Senior High has only played two section games so there’s still time to improve.

Plus, this is a young team with a roster comprised of sophomores and juniors like Ausmus, who is a sophomore.

Moorhead coach Dave Morinville had plenty of praise for the Green Wave.

He knows what it’s like to watch a team figure things out.

Two weeks ago, Moorhead suffered 6-0 loss to Duluth East, the worst home loss in Morinville’s 14 seasons.

Last week, it upset previously undefeated No. 1 Wayzata.

Morinville said it’s a process but said Senior High is on the right track.

“I like playing them,” Morinville said. “It’s always close and the thing about that team is they don’t give up easy goals. You have to work hard to score against a team like that.”

THIEF RIVER FALLS — Jared Kolquist scored with one second remaining to lead Hermantown to a win over East Grand Forks Senior High on Thursday at the REA Holiday Classic.

Alex Robertson, Andy Gregoire and Zack Lawdermilt scored for the Green Wave, who led 3-2 just 12 seconds into the third period.

Garret Skrbich had two goals and two assists to lead Hermantown, who was outshot 35-26.

Wave defeat North Carolina Hurricanes 7-5

Boys hockey: A five-goal outburst in the third period carried East Grand Forks Senior High to a 7-5 win over the North Carolina Hurricanes in the Ralph Engelstad Holiday Classic on Wednesday in Thief River Falls. North Carolina led 4-2 heading into the final period. Andrew Gregoire, Josh Moser, Kolton Aubol, Gage Ausmus and Tommy Hajicek all scored for the Green Wave in the final period. Beau Scheving kicked out 25 shots in goal for the Green Wave.

The Greenwave face 5th ranked Hermantown at 5:00 tonight in TRF.

EGF defeats St. Louis Park 6-3

The Greenwave opened the holiday tournament with a 6-3 win over St. Louis Park.  Senior Michael Stengl led the way with 2 goals and an assist.  Sophomore Tommy Hajicek added a goal and 2 assists to extend his goal scoring streak to 6 games.  The Wave outshot their opponent 57-13.

Greenwave lose to Crookston 3-2 in OT

In a big Section 8 matchup the Greenwave lost a tight one to rival Crookston 3-2 in OT in Crookston.   The loss snaps the Greenwave's 4 game win streak.  The Greenwave gave up a 2-1 lead with under 4 minutes left to play in the 3rd period.  The Wave outshot their opponents 32 -19 but couldn't find a way to win.

The REA Tournament in TRF begins today with the Greenwave taking on St. Louis Park.

Senior High looking for edge in race for Gambucci Cup

It has been so long since East Grand Forks Senior High has won the Gambucci Cup that co-coach Cory Chupka can’t put his finger on the exact date.

But the Green Wave took a big step toward winning it for the first time since 2004 on Tuesday night.

Tommy Hajicek scored twice and added an assist and Zack Lawdermilt had a goal and two assists to lead Senior High to a 4-1 home victory over North Dakota state defending champion Grand Forks Central.

The Knights currently hold the trophy that goes to the Greater Grand Forks team with the best head-to-head record.

“Oh boy, you would have go to back to my first year with (Jim) Scanlan coaching,” Chupka said of the last time Senior High was the best team in the Grand Cities. “Whenever you play Central at home, you know it’s going to be a good team. We played very well tonight as a team. We were moving the puck well and getting to the puck.”

It didn’t take much time for the Green Wave to make their statement.

On the first shift of the game, Corey Mack dug the puck out of the corner and sent it to Lawdermilt in the slot. Central goalie Derek Fuller made the first save, but the puck came out to Hajicek, who snapped it between Fuller’s pads just 14 seconds into the game.

“East Side showed up ready to play,” Central coach Tony Bina said. “They were moving their feet. They were finishing their checks. We stood around and watched for most of the night.”

Central, which dropped to 5-3 on the season, fell behind by two goals early in the second. Lawdermilt sent Tyler Hajicek on a breakaway. The junior forward snapped a shot off the left post and in at 1:48.

The Knights got their lone goal of the game at 11:08 of the second, when leading scorer Johnny Simonson curled around the right circle and fired a shot high over Senior High goalie Hunter Aubol (23 saves) for a four-on-three power-play goal.

“We were right back in the game at that point,” said Bina, whose team played without a couple of defensemen who were injured at the Herald Jason Stadstad Hockey Classic last weekend. “We were never really out of it until late in the third period.”

Lawdermilt extended Senior High’s lead with a breakaway goal late in the second, scoring on the backhand for a 3-1 Green Wave lead.

The final goal was scored when Lawdermilt connected with Tyler Hajicek on a backdoor feed at 10:52.

“The boys are really fired up right now,” said Chupka, whose team has defeated Warroad and the Knights in their last two games. “They worked hard and they came ready to play tonight.”
